About EVD

Ebola Virus Disease is serious, but early reporting helps stop spread.

Ebola Virus Disease is a severe illness that can affect people and other primates. It spreads through direct contact with blood or body fluids of a person who is sick with or has died from Ebola, or through contaminated items such as needles, bedding, or medical equipment.

Kenya remains alert because of regional movement across borders. Preparedness depends on fast reporting, surveillance, infection prevention, laboratory confirmation, contact tracing, and clear public communication.

Recognize Symptoms

Know the warning signs

Early symptoms can look like other common illnesses, so recent travel or contact history matters.

Fever

Sudden fever, chills, weakness, tiredness, headache, or muscle pain.

Body Aches

Sore throat, joint pain, abdominal pain, or general body discomfort.

Vomiting or Diarrhea

Vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and signs of dehydration can occur.

Bleeding

Bleeding can occur later in illness, but it is not always present.

Prevention

Simple actions protect families and communities

Protect yourself

  • Avoid direct contact with blood or body fluids from anyone with suspected EVD.
  • Wash hands often with soap and safe running water or use alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Do not handle items that may be contaminated, including bedding, clothing, needles, or equipment.
  • Seek advice before caring for a sick person with fever and recent travel or contact risk.

Protect the community

  • Report suspected cases quickly through official health channels.
  • Support screening, surveillance, contact tracing, and safe referrals.
  • Follow guidance from health workers during alerts or outbreaks.
  • Avoid rumors by sharing information from KNPHI, Ministry of Health, WHO, and CDC.

What To Do

If you suspect Ebola exposure or illness

  1. Call 719 immediately for public health guidance.
  2. Avoid close contact with others while waiting for instructions.
  3. Do not travel to a health facility without calling first if EVD exposure is possible.
  4. Share recent travel, contact history, and symptoms with health officials.
